‘Mathu Vadalara 2’ Movie Review: Truth makes this spoofy thriller drama a fun watch
Sri Singha Koduri and Satya in director Ritesh Rana’s ‘Mathu Vadalara 2’
2019 Telugu Comedy Thriller Mathu VadalaraEnjoys a loyal fan base among movie lovers for its quirky writing and surprises at every turn. For its sequel Mathu Vadalara 2director Ritesh Rana essays two of the three main characters, Babu (Sri Singh Koduri) and Yesu (Satya). The pair have gone from gig workers to investigative officers in a fictional HE (high emergency) team. Suspension of disbelief is a prerequisite for watching this comedy, which combines silly, goofy and spoofy fun. While the fun quotient wears off after a point, it’s easy to see through the lack of sharpness in the script compared to the first part. However, Sathya’s effortlessly entertaining performance turns the film into a laugh riot.
Ritesh Rana is aware of recall value Mathu Vadalara Enjoying that he peppered the sequel with ample references to the first film, right from the disclaimer of the older woman’s voice we saw in the first part, only to be cut short by a voice claiming she wasn’t part of the sequel. Ajay returns with a different identity and so does Venela Kishore. The director, who shares writing credits with R Teja, uses these two characters to comment on the ways of the film industry and society. One is ‘toxic’. father’ (Toxic Guy), another ‘Youth Star’ youth whose fans call themselves Juveniles. Like minors! One of the films in production is called ‘Maran’ and in another scene we see a character wearing an ‘animal’ t-shirt. A subtle message about the mob mentality of fans is also thrown into the narrative.
Mathu Vadalara 2 (Telugu)
Director: Ritesh Rana
Starring: Sri Singh Koduri, Satya, Venela Kishore
Storyline: The delivery agents of the first part have now become investigating officers, but their urge to make a quick buck keeps them in trouble.
its root Mathu Vadalara 2However, Babu and Yesu hang around who haven’t gotten over the urge to make a quick buck. They find loopholes in kidnapping cases they help solve and pocket some tidy cash. The first half hour introduces the characters of the HE team — Michael (Sunil), Saxena (Raja Chemblu), Nidhi (Faria Abdullah) and others, led by Deepa (Rohini) — with ‘meta’ references. For example, Michael is described as a ‘comedian Sunil-turned-villain lookalike’ and to highlight that he is an undercover agent, he is seen wearing a canary yellow raincoat (cover)! These segments set the tone for the comedy we can expect through the film.
A few plot points and narrative style are reminiscent of the first part. There is confusion about floor and apartment numbers. There is an all-purpose knife that is used for housebreaking. Yet, someone has died and the words ‘rest in peace’ appear. Kala Bhairava’s music has a few distinctive notes similar to the first khanda. The characters themselves mention deja vu, as if to prime the audience to find these elements familiar. Suresh Sarangam’s cinematography opts for a darker tone this time, in keeping with the HE team and the mood of the thriller.
The snapshots of songs and scenes from Chiranjeevi’s blockbuster films and the quirky television serials we saw in Part One, here, find continuity, acting like timestamps on key points of the narrative. The plot of this film revolves around a kidnapping investigation that goes awry. The fun lies more in the plight of the cornered characters leading up to these parts and the later parts that unravel the puzzle. Considerable humor is also generated from spelling mistakes (look up how Lake View Lodge words are spelled) or how Satya messes up common idioms and phrases. Sample this – ‘Don’t judge the book by its cover!’
Mathu Vadalara 2 Satya’s show is all over the place with solid support coming from Simha Koduri, Faria Abdullah, Venela Kishore, Ajay, Sunil and Raja Chemblu.
The film isn’t done before destroying an oft-repeated scene where someone is robbed of cash every time the prime minister appears on television. You know the rest.
