MAMI 2024: Launch of ‘All We Imagine as Light’ Festival; Shabana Azmi received the Excellence in Cinema Award


The 2024 edition of the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival kicked off with a full-house screening of filmmaker Payal Kapadia’s Cannes Grand Prix winner. All we imagine as light And veteran actress Shabana Azmi is being honored with the Excellence in Cinema Award.

The latest edition of the film gala, organized by the Mumbai Academy of Moving Image, officially kicked off on Friday evening at Regal Cinemas in South Mumbai.

All we imagine as lightwhich made history in May as the first film from India to win the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival, is a Malayalam-Hindi language film about Prabha (Kani Kusruti), a Mumbai nurse whose life is thrown into disarray when she receives an estranged husband. Kapadia, along with actors Chaya Kadam, Divya Prabha, Ridhu Harun, and Rana Daggubati, were greeted with applause and a standing ovation.

All we imagine as light An Indo-French co-production between France’s Petit Chaos and India’s Chalk & Cheese Films, with Indian producer Ranveer Das (who also served as the film’s cinematographer). It is distributed in India by Spirit Media, a production house founded by Daggubati.

Shabana Azmi was honored with the Excellence in Cinema Award by legendary actor Waheeda Rehman in recognition of her contribution to Indian cinema. The festival celebrated 50 years of Ajmi’s career with a special screening of his iconic films rheumatism.

The Mumbai Film Festival, running from October 19 to 24 at two venues, Regal Cinemas and Juhu PVR, will showcase over 110 films from over 45 countries spanning over 50 languages.

The closing film of the festival is Anora by Sean Baker, which won the highest prize, the Palme d’Or, at the 77th Cannes Film Festival.
