Anjali Patil starrer ‘Nakh’, directed by Triparna Banerjee, will compete at the Red Sea International Film Festival

A Hindi short film by Hyderabad-based filmmaker Triparna Banerjee, nailsThe only Indian film selected in the Red Sea: Shorts competition category of the fourth edition of the Red Sea International Film Festival (RedSeaIFF) to be held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia from December 5 to 14.

nails A psychological horror film of 15 minutes and 44 seconds, it stars Anjali Patil, Aishwarya Sonar and Riza Reji (a model, dancer and actor with Down syndrome). Triparna, who grew up in Jharkhand and moved to Hyderabad a decade ago, is a visiting faculty at Annapurna College of Film and Media, Hyderabad.

In the film, Anjali Patel plays Dolly, an isolated nurse who is haunted by scars from the past. He lives with his sister Moni (Riza Rezi), who has Down’s syndrome. The sisters have more seemingly normal lives, having survived the abuse. The narrative explores one sister’s tendency to be overly cautious while the other is the keeper of family secrets.

The inspiration for the character, who has Down syndrome, Triparna reveals, came from close quarters. “As a child I didn’t know much about my aunt’s condition — Down syndrome. I was curious how he conversed with imaginary people. Sometimes, he would give a different account of what happened. Those memories stayed with me.” Triparna wondered if her aunt was keeping secrets of numerous incidents which she could not divulge and what would happen if she did not get an interested audience.

When Triparna was a student in New Delhi in her teens, she recalls being increasingly vigilant as incidents of crimes against women made headlines. “My speed dial will be 100. This was a time before smartphones. I’ll also carry a knife in my bag and hope I don’t have to use it. I will also think about whether I will be able to use it when needed.” In nailsThe character played by Anjali Patil is hyper-vigilant and the film tries to portray the trauma arising from past events and the stress it puts on the present.
