Hiphop Tamija Adhi in ‘Kadaisi Ulaga Por’ and her Concert for Serenade in Coimbatore

There is a dystopian universe where Chennai’s iconic Ripon Building, the seat of Greater Chennai Corporation, has been destroyed. One can see overgrown vines snaking through a ruined, iconic colonial building—a clear casualty of an apocalyptic war. Out of the rubble and conflict, hip-hop Tamija Adhi emerged. In Kadaisi Ulaga PorA film set in a fictional southern province, he is the protagonist, director, producer, music director and (Oof) songwriter. Was it like war to don many hats for the film?
At Vanaram’s PGS studio, Aadhi settles in for a chat Hindu. He is tired yet enthusiastic after directing a few promotional videos for the film, which is all set to release soon. He says today is all about content and collaboration, as this is his first production under the Hip Hop Tamizha banner.

Adhi adds that shooting much of it with seasoned professionals like Nassar and Natarajan “Natty” Subramanian proved that interesting professional relationships are the key to lasting friendships in the industry. That, and maintaining a gang of his own that he’s relied on for years since college. “My office is full of my boys. Every day, work is fun because there are many interesting ideas and a vision. Although Adhi has other projects on hand, music, which is his claim to fame, is still an active part of his life. This is why he is all set to perform at Coimbatore’s Kodisia Ground on September 8 as part of his world tour Return of the Dragon.

“Take away all the ‘actor’, ‘director’ tags and you are still left with an independent artist in me. I want to interact with the community. This is why we started Underground Tribe. Many independent artists have used this platform to shine,” he says.
Which star from the scene is on his playlist today? “I hear all new things. Recently heard Kelly. I am a rapper so I also listen to Pal Dabba, Asal Kolar and MC Devesh. My playlist is full of independent artists,” he says and assures us that it will stay that way.
